THE BANNERET AWARD
This year, LAFS is offering a cash prize to the best working class show at the Ed fringe.
WHAT IS A BANNERET? WHY IS IT CALLED THAT?
Historically, a Banneret was a knight who was qualified to raise their own banner and lead their own forces. A title slightly higher than one who was knighted by the monarchy, the title of Banneret could traditionally only be awarded upon the battlefield by a sovereign. Unlike the landowning civil title of Baron, a banneret was a military position, gifted to the working class. Here at LAFS, we want people from lower income backgrounds to be able to raise their own banner, not just the upper classes.
We at LAFS were taken by the idea of using our position and abilities to help elevate the artists in the trenches to a higher standing. An artist who wins the Banneret Award is someone who fights for their art and can bolster those around them.
The Banneret Award is signified by a square plaque, the same shape that a Knight Banneret would fly into battle. Included is a £1500 prize to help fund their projects and dreams.
HOW DOES ONE RECEIVE THE AWARD?
Like many awards, the Banneret is subjective to the beliefs and opinions of the LAFS board. Those considered for the award will be noticed for what they bring to the space and community, and their potential contributions to the future of their art form. Any performance in any medium from the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is eligible, except the shows funded by ‘daddies’ money’.
